The protocol touted as the way to standardize user provisioning across enterprises and eventually across the cloud is nearly dead, lacks support from major cloud providers and faces new models that could make it obsolete. Work on the Service Provisioning Markup Language (SPML) is still limping along after a decade and a near-death experience last year. But in its wake are proprietary APIs used by cloud app providers and an emerging model for a modernized standard built around REST and other technologies that could remove a major hurdle to user management in the cloud.
